Fire Ceremony for the Deceased
After passing away, a person is traditionally said to spend 49 days in the bardo (or interval) between the life that has just ended and the next life. A powerful way to help such a person experience less suffering in the bardo and to make a connection with the Dharma is to make a special offering on his or her behalf to the sur, the daily fire ceremony that is conducted as part of the evening chanting practice at MOCD.
Use this button to sponsor a sur for the deceased for the duration of his/her bardo period (49 days). When you make your payment, remember to include the name of the deceased in the indicated box.
- 49 Day Fire Ceremony -$100.00

Gya Chö, or “An offering of one hundred” is a traditional method for the accumulation of merit, the purification of sickness, pain, and distress. In the Buddhist tradition, butter lamps symbolize the clarity of wisdom, and this offering of light creates harmony and brings joy to the mind, and in particular promotes success, prosperity, longevity, and internal and environmental balance and peace. When offered on behalf of the deceased, prayers are recited for their liberation in the Bardo. Aspiring to follow the example of Lama Norlha Rinpoche’s teacher, Kyabje Dorje Chang Kalu Rinpoche who offered 100 butter lamps each night, MOCD completes this ceremony once every month typically on a Saturday morning. The offering is accompanied by the chanting of prayers of auspiciousness and sealed with aspiration and dedication prayers in English and Tibetan. All are welcome to participate in the chanting and arrangement of the offerings, please check the calendar for details.
